New Look!

Deucenet has a new look! Hooray! Let me know what you think.

Deucenet has also had many other major upgrades today, such as an updated version of WordPress, an updated MySQL database, and vastly improved spam comment filters. I also fixed a bug that kept my custom 404 page from loading correctly, and set the background as fixed. And lastly, I made it so the individual columns are set as a percentage of the window width (they used to be a set number of pixels). This will cause the columns to scale accordingly as you resize your browser window. Again, let me know what you think of the changes!

Edit: Ok, I just put in something else. You can now sign up for a deucenet.com account using the link in the sidebar to the right. This will allow you to not have to fill in all of your information every time you post a comment. Also, if you’re good, I might even promote you to be able write new posts! Wow!

Another Edit: After much massaging of the code, I have made Deucenet “Widget Aware” as those at Wordpress are calling it.  This means that the sidebar you see to the right is dynamic, and I can drop widgets in and out easily.  It’s very exciting.  I now have real time stats over there, showing how many people are currently looking at this website, what the last 5 search terms were that found a hit on this site (from Google, Yahoo, etc.).  Ok, I swear this is the last edit to this post.

Windows Properties

Well, I got bored, and about a minute later, my Window’s System Properties now looks like this:

system properties

and when you click on the ‘Support Information’ button, you get this:

support information

I am 1337… or something like that.

Sysinternals, why…?

Well, www.sysinternals.com (the greatest website ever in terms of free windows utilities that are freaking amazing) has been bought out by Microsoft. This site contains some of the greatest freeware ever, such as process explorer, that make the life of a computer tech such as myself infinitely easier. The good news though is that the free utilities will continue to be free… until microsoft decides to do that thing that it does so well, and mess stuff up.

Please be upset along with me.

Windows Dancer

About a week ago, I got a new computer that has Windows XP Media Center on it. Today I noticed a little program that came preinstalled called “Windows Dancer”. I was intrigued, as most probably would be, as to what this program did. I fired it up, started some music, and suddenly a little person appeared on my desktop, dancing along to my music, and impressively it was mostly on the beat too. I fooled around with it a bit and discovered that I could download more dancers. I proceded to download the dancer named Ben who is a fat guy that does some pretty funny dancing, such as the shopping cart and the sprinkler, along with many other moves. Here are some screen shots I took of Ben:

Here’s Ben doing the sprinkler on my iTunes window.

Here he is dancing on Deucenet!

By the way, this is actually a product created by Microsoft, not just some weird 3rd party people. Bill Gates, you have officially lost it! However, I am highly amused.

favicon.ico

W00t! After trying and trying and becoming frustrated and then trying some more, I finally got my favicon.ico to work. Don’t know what that is? It’s the little icon thingy you can see up next to the URL of this page in the address bar. (Note: IE users won’t be able to see this until they add the site to their favorites because IE sucks) Everyone please be excited for me, because I certainly am.

Also everyone should be excited about my amazing talent at creating a 16×16 pixel logo. (Sarcasm anyone?)

AIM Viruses

Edit: 1/3/06
I have now updated the aimfix.exe file. It is now the version created by www.jayloden.com on 12/27/05.

It has come to my attention that there are a lot of AIM viruses going around. Someone from your buddy list sends you a link, you click on the link, and bam, you have a virus. Since I’m sick of getting all of these virus links sent to me, here’s a way you can get the virus off of your computer:

1. Download this program.
2. Double click on the program.
3. That’s it

I originally got this AIM fixer from http://www.jayloden.com/, so props go out to that website.

Samsung Part II

My replacement monitor finally arrived today, and it’s only about 2 or 3 weeks later than Samsung initially told me! I’m just glad to finally have it though. And as an added bonus, this one has no dead pixels, while the other one that died had one in the top left of the screen.

W00t.

I also went out today and bought a better surge protector, in case that was what killed my monitor.

Samsung

Samsung, where do I begin? Last week my Samsung monitor got fried when the power went out, even though everything else on my power strip was fine. It was under warranty, so I called up tech support and within five minutes they agreed to send me a new monitor with 2nd day air shipping. I was very pleased. However, when the monitor did not arrive within a few days, I called back tech support to see what was going on. I was told I would have it by Monday, which was yesterday. I still don’t have it today, so I called them back yet again, and I was told that their warehouse hadn’t even shipped it yet and I can expect it to arrive in about 7 business days. I’m no longer as pleased with Samsung tech support as I was after the first call.

On a somewhat different note, the Samsung hold music is hilarious. One minute they’re playing some awful hip-hop thing, then suddenly they switch to some smooth jazz. Next thing I know I’m listening to some trance, followed by some hard rock. I was amused.

Dual Monitors

Earlier today I set up both of my monitors on my computer running out of my ATI Radeon 9600XT AGP video card (one DVI and one VGA). I must say that having the secondary monitor is great. Even though it’s smaller and doesn’t have as big of a resolution as my primary monitor, I’m finding it very useful. Currently I use it to store my Gaim and Winamp windows. This allows me to still watch movies or TV (via my ATI TV-Wonder PCI card) on my primary monitor in full screen and still be able to chat with friends over Gaim. Overall, I give a dual monitor setup 5/5 stars.

Here’s a picture of my current setup.

Open Source

Lately I’ve been becoming a big proponent of open-source software. From the Wikipedia, “Open source means when sources of information, code, pictures, maps, authors, and everything related are all publicly viewable and openly modifiable.”

A main advantage of having everything publicly viewable is that the software is free. Secondly, with everything openly modifiable, many improvements and extra functionality (commonly refered to as extensions) are easily added into the programs.

Don’t feel like paying 150 bucks for Microsoft Office? Download Open Office, a program that is very similar in both looks and functionality to the Microsoft version. Fed up with AIM getting more and more asthetically displeasing as new versions are released? Try out Gaim (which I myself prefer greatly over AIM). Don’t like the Microsoft programs for internet browsing or accessing your inbox? Head on over to the Mozilla website.

As you can see, I definitly like the open source idea. It opens many doors for new and inovative software designs. Take a look at SourceForge if you want to check out many different open source projects.
